Where to Stay in Samos

Samos' hotels are spread across a handful of very different coastal towns, and which one you choose changes your holiday. Here is the honest breakdown, area by area.

Samos' accommodation is spread across five distinct bases rather than concentrated on a single strip: the east-coast towns of Kokkari and Pythagoreio, the capital Vathy, the second town Karlovasi on the north-west coast, and the quiet Marathokampos/Votsalakia area on the west coast. The differences between these areas — distance to the airport, nightlife, price, and whether you'll want a car — matter more than the differences between individual hotels inside each one.

Samos is also seasonal in the way most Greek islands are: July and August are hottest, busiest and most expensive, while a meaningful number of smaller family-run properties close entirely from November to April. Booking early matters far more in high summer than at any other time of year.

What kind of place should you book?

Samos has a narrower range of accommodation than Santorini or Mykonos, but real character at the family-run end of the market.

Hotels & beach resorts

Concentrated in Kokkari, Pythagoreio and Vathy, from simple family-run hotels to a handful of larger resort-style properties. Pools and half-board are common; true all-inclusive is less standard here than in the Cyclades or Dodecanese.

Mid-range to upper mid-range

Studios & self-catering apartments

The single most common accommodation type on Samos, especially outside the three main towns — a private studio or apartment, often with a kitchenette and a balcony, run by a local family. Good value and flexible.

Traditional guesthouses

Small, family-run rooms in stone village houses, particularly in Kokkari's old town and the mountain villages (Manolates, Vourliotes). Simple but characterful, and usually the most sociable option.

  • Air conditioning, not just a ceiling fan — it matters from June onwards.
  • Distance to the nearest town if you plan to eat out every night — the west coast in particular can mean a taxi or rental car.
  • Whether the property has sea view or sea access, since "Samos" listings range from beachfront to a hillside village.
  • Ferry and flight connections for your dates — Samos International Airport (SMI) has far more flights in summer than winter.
  • Whether a rental car is realistically needed — public buses exist but are infrequent outside the main coastal towns.

In practice, yes. Marathokampos and Votsalakia are 45–60 minutes from the airport, and buses on that side of the island run infrequently — a rental car makes the quiet-coast trade-off much easier to live with.

Flights, ferries and getting around

Pythagoreio, if your trip is genuinely short — it's minutes from the airport and the Turkey ferry, with the Heraion and Eupalinos Tunnel nearby. Kokkari suits a longer stay where you'll eat out most evenings.
